Navatman Music Collective (NMC) is a one-of-a-kind choir that celebrates the depth and beauty of Carnatic (South Indian classical) music with a soul and energy that is their own. Their respect for the rich tradition is paired with a contemporary sensibility, openness to many genres, and an honest joy for the music they sing. Their sound is simultaneously nostalgic and boundary-breaking, aiming to engage the discerning and uninitiated alike. Based in New York City, NMC also enjoys collaborating with talented instrumentalists in the area who support and inspire them. They are directed by vocalist Roopa Mahadevan. About An Untimely Joy: Making art with someone is to connect with them in the simplest way. NMC's weekly two-hour rehearsals have turned strangers in New York City into easy, breezy, beautiful family. This album, An Untimely Joy, celebrates so many melodies and moments of that transformation over the last two years (2014 - 2016). Just the serendipity that has brought these individuals together is worth singing about - it is The Untimely Joy. The title of the album is inspired by the beautiful ideas of philosopher Gilles Deleuze. "An untimely idea is neither eternal nor fleeting, because it works on the moment, transforms it, opens it up for another time."
