Nantucket is a funny place. On every tide a small sliver of this island’s story washes away into the ocean and a tiny bit of the next chapter washes up onto the beach. The music in this album -- and I am old enough that a group of songs properly selected and produced will always be called an album to me -- gives voice to that notion. This is the work of about 150 musicians. Some can be heard in local bars, some can be heard busking on Main Street, and to hear some of them you have to go to church on Sunday morning. These forty songs were built from 45-rpm discs of 60’s pop singles and from digital files created just yesterday. It was built on the rock and roll of Jimmy Duarte's bands and The Dionysians, flowing out the windows of the long gone and much missed Thirty Acres, but also on the original music of Jake and Janette Vohs, and on the voices of the Flanagan family bringing new life to a song written in 1916. You will find a song here from 1965, originally produced by the same guy who produced album Disraeli Gears for a little band called Cream. You will also find a song from the ShepCats, a slightly less famous band, whose lead singer spends his days teaching music to elementary school kids. Felix Pappalardi and Steve Sheppard, rock stars and guys with day jobs, connected by the music. The whole thing produced in a studio that is pure Nantucket. Garden Rock Studios is a place where an island kid -- who came home from the rock and roll road so many years ago but could never quite get rock and roll out of his bones – still makes music with his family and friends, although now he is no longer a kid. So you play your own song, you find your own voice, and there comes a day when you understand that what you really did is lend your voice to the general vibe of life on this island.
