NIMBO is the latest project by WADE DAO and HUGO, a unique MC/producer duo taking Taipei by storm. Known for their signature medley of poetry, symbolism, critique, storytelling, and journalism, they are two unmistakable beacons in Taiwan’s conception of independent and alternative Hip-Hop. Mixing dark humor, poetry, and the alchemy of sampling anything, anyhow—WADE DAO and HUGO appear as an urgent force of nature, painting a picture of a city whose creative environment is at the edge of disaster, and their subsequent intervention. It’s bittersweet, as if they were forced to make this, out of a certain necessity for change. Released by the enigmatic music creative agency and label Melting Part, the 7-track project looms over the city like a thundercloud that never comes down. Sonically, the production on the album sounds blunt, dense, warm, and dangerous (produced entirely by WADE DAO and HUGO)—sharpened by the sonic engineering of GMA-winning producer and longtime collaborator rgry. “FLYGOTT” is the lead single and the duo’s unmistakable call to arms. Filled with hope and urgency, the track features both MCs at their sharpest and most vulnerable. In the music video directed by R8ISE, the two throw down in front of Taiwan’s National Concert Hall, and each MC’s voice leaves a trail of fire across the traditional rap narratives of violence and drugs. Both WADE DAO and HUGO know that here, in Taipei, the war is internalized. “Strong man needs a good cry”, laments HUGO, while WADE DAO asserts: “if we ain’t gon’ move, 還有誰?”. Meanwhile, “LES HOOPERS” is the most athletic track on the album. WADE DAO and HUGO appear like two olympians trading fire, over a beat that changes restlessly, flickering between noir jazz and fanfare. “BRUNCH” submerges listeners in a spiritual forest of echoes and trailing sirens, sounding much like what a subconscious would sound like, if the city had one.
