This album is the musical equivalent of a five-foot string of firecrackers; once it starts blowing up, it sounds like it's never going to stop, and while this band's onslaught seems pretty basic on the surface, that's not to say it isn't smart. At his best, guitarist Brian Guilloteen sounds like the younger brother of Duane Denison, combining the Jesus Lizard's off-kilter but razor-sharp attack with a welcome dose of teenage sloppiness, and Shawn Guilloteen's vocals manage to be at once totally incoherent and thoroughly absorbing, a scream from the void that's funny but just a little bit scary. Get Knifed doesn't sound as if it was produced so much as it occurred and someone was on hand to document it, but mad genius Tim Kerr managed to get the whole strange episode on tape with admirable clarity and cinéma vérité accuracy. In short, this isn't punk-pop, but full-on Lone Star dementia, and if Get Knifed ain't the same thing as seeing the Fatal Flying Guilloteens live, it's probably a whole lot safer.
