A couple of years ago, I was on my way to Arapo Island, one of the many beautiful beaches at Parque Nacional Mochima, located on the eastern coast of Venezuela. We were on board of my good friend José Zambrano's boat when he started yelling: "Pollution, pollution!" I got closer to him and he told me: "You need to get contaminated with the good music of all over the world". At that moment, I thought that if somebody was "polluted" with good music all over, that was this Maracucho. However, I took his advice and I opened myself to the upcoming pollution. Months flew by, tours, concerts, and less and less time to compose. On August 1st, 2008, after thinking long and hard on whether I would have enough time to produce a new CD, I made up my mind and I started composing, recording and producing the CD you can now listen to. First, I called my great friend, piano player and producer Agustín Espina. In 2007, I had threatened him with the idea of co-producing my next record. He said: "Sure man, let's do it!" The following days, I kept waking up to think, to compose and to play. Ideas flew and every week, we were able to assemble the music, that fit tightly as puzzles. It was recorded and polished right away. Unbelievably, after 75 days, thanks to God and to the collaborations of a multitude of talented people, the CD was totally produced, mixed and masterized, ready for impression. The original plan was to name the CD "Pollution" but the negative connotations related to this word would require too many explanations (I am sorry, José) and we came up with "Reinvención" (Reinvention). This concept reflects for the most part what I try to express with this musical production. This CD is for those who, like me, love music. Music must be free, spontaneous, challenging, irreverent, beautiful, deep, universal, but above all, music must be able to touch the soul of those who listen to it. Music is ageless, you take or leave it, you either love it or hate it, and either it makes your cry or it makes you laugh. Somehow, a lot of humor seeped into this production. I can't help it, I am Maracucho! Nobody is perfect on this world. We want to let new generations know that there is a Bolero by Ravel, a Florentino and the Devil, or poems by Benedetti or Neruda. We also want other generations to discover that reggaetón and other contemporary rhythms also have interesting twists. No doubt that music is frontierless. It is universal! Does it matter if Ravel's Bolero resounds with drums or that reggaetón shares tracks with Rachmaninoff, Tchaikovsky or Stravinsky? What if tango sounds like a Zulian contradanza or if a tamborera is played with the palm hands and it sounds Gitana? … We are in the factory where reason and emotion get intertwined and merged.
