简介

Project Releases Well Come Back To You by Mitchell Hillman, Java Magazine Music Editor It seems, suddenly that forgotten genres like Shoegaze Rock, Dream Pop and Math Rock are suddenly being resurrected in various corners of the Phoenix scene and honestly, it’s nice to see. Sure, it’s not everyone’s cup of tea, but it’s brilliant nonetheless. It happens to be one of my cups of tea so I’m overjoyed to hear something like the sophomore release from Project Well Come Back To You. First of all, I need to address Donna Blumenfeld’s breathy vocals which adds a sense of sultry Slowdive panache to the whole affair. “End Of Summer” is a breathy beautiful invitation to a hypnotic, dreamy album that if played in the right environment will lead to hallucinations, vivid dreams and elegant lovemaking. The follow up, “Yours” doesn’t change this one iota, though it evokes more of a soundtrack feel to a movie or a show you would only discuss with your more intellectual friends concerning how it felt like there was a heavy David Lynch influence all around. “Traveling Song” speeds things up a bit, for a moment, until it returns to the hypnogogic state Project dwells within, it plays as a math rock instrumental (save for lyricless vocals), but it’s powerful enough that I think they may want to submit their recordings to IFC for some licensing as soon as possible. Once more with “Interlude” we are drawn into a dreamscape that almost seems too personal to accept the invitation, it’s a beautifully simple piece that is awe inspiring once more and once more, movies that haven’t been made begin to play in your mind while it rises and fades away. “Equinox” begins with spoken vocals, bare, before heading into a lullabye-esque tune that makes you smile for the sheer childlike wonder it evokes, “Thought I saw a shooting star, could have been something in my eye, there’s no way to know for sure, I hope you tell me when you come by.” It reaches something of a dramatic tumult midway through, but returns to the lullaby to send you off in a soul assuring finish. By the time “Dropped Time” arrives, you are in love with the dreamy nuances of Project, whether it is the tender vocals by both the male and female vocals, but the general vibe—this is musical codeine. The finale is, perhaps the greatest thing I’ve ever heard. My favorite band of all time is the Velvet Underground and Project finishes the album with the very obscure “I’m Sticking With You.” In VU terms, this song was Maureen Tucker’s finest moment, and here it may well be Project’s finest moment—it makes me want to send it to Lou Reed right now. It also occurs to me that Project may be our very own Galaxy 500 and I will sleep better every night from here on out, knowing simply that Project exists. Dream Showcase: Project, Instructions, Former Friends of Young Americans, KNESSET and Tremulants. This Friday at FilmBar, Project will release this little masterpiece, joined by Monophonic Hillside. This should be an amazing event, that kicks off at 9PM. If you haven’t witnessed a release show at FilmBar, it’s difficult to be topped for the atmosphere alone. For only a $5 cover you can witness the power of Project live as they work through their ouevre. I can’t wait, I’ve memorized the EP, now I’m looking forward to catching it live.
