简介

Guitarist J.J. Vicars blasts through 13 tunes like a rebuilt Chevy with a 350 big block under the hood. His now-legendary Gibson Firebird plugged into his trusty Music Man amp fires off lethal shards of Blues, Boogie & Rock 'n' Roll on 8 songs that include Tailgators bassist J.J. Barrera and Texas drum legend Mike Buck before he navigates his pawn shop acoustic all by his lonesome through 5 numbers of primitive lowdown backporch boogie. SCI-FI DINER kicks off with the swinging uptempo Freddie King number SEE SEE BABY,goes into the heavy chug of ROCK MY WORLD,and then kicks it up another notch with a burning rendition of Jerry Lee Lewis' REAL WILD CHILD. JJ's BOOGIE blazes a trail through the Texas Guitar Boogie tradition started by Blind Lemon Jefferson and Lightnin' Hopkins and carried on through Johnny Winter and SRV. The CD kicks back into a cozy groove with a pair of funky shuffles, the laid back LEAVIN' IN THE MORNIN' and the rollicking DOWN ON MY LUCK. J.J. then shows off his Jazz/R&B leanings with the Bill Doggett/Jimmy Smith-inspired CROW'S FEET 'N' CHICKEN A**. His signature song, the hard-driving TAKE ME ON DOWN TO MEMPHIS closes out the band portion of the CD with a bang; two and half minutes of pure, unadulterated turn-the-dump-over-and-go-home-with-the-waitress Rock'n'Roll. The second half of the CD travels the backroads at night. Solo acoustic, dripping with chicken grease and echoing the Country Blues of Texas and the Delta. TELL ME and BOOGIE WITH GRANNY are straight out of the Lightnin' Hopkins school, while the John Lee Hooker-style GOTTA RIDE rolls out of the-jukejoint-beyond-time. STAYED IN TEXAS is an autobiographical song mining the East Texas songster tradition of Lightnin' and Mance Lipscomb. SPANISH FANDANGO closes out the CD,J.J.'s arrangement adding a blue flavor to this parlor piece from the 1800's. For his debut release he's dipped into the music that he cut his teeth on-Lightnin' Hopkins, Freddie King, Chuck Berry, The Tailgators, early T-birds, John Lee Hooker, Slim Harpo. Using digital technonlogy to come full circle to the early days of recording the entire CD was cut live in the studio with no overdubs, recorded and mixed in a single 10 hour session. Get in,get it down and get out. Drummer Mike Buck (who also played on the first T-birds album) was heard to comment at the end of the sesion, "Now that's the way records are supposed to be made!"
