Conspiracy Theory is a jazz quintet that plays a mixture of original compositions by members of the group and personalized renditions of well-known jazz and standard tunes. We have created a musical environment where the individual musicians can grow and express themselves within the context of a cohesive and empathetic improvising ensemble. This is a real band in a time when so many jazz careers and ensembles are project-driven, ephemeral, ad hoc, and somewhat superficial. The members of Conspiracy Theory are: Pat Harbison-trumpet Ariel Alexander-alto and soprano saxes Jon Bremen-guitar Jesse Wittman-bass Jonas Oglesbee-drums. Other than Pat Harbison (the wizened elder of the group), all the band members happen to currently be Indiana University jazz studies students. They are all professional jazz musicians who are currently using formal education as one way to develop their artistry. The group has been rehearsing and performing original compositions and unique takes on jazz standard repertoire regularly since that time. The new CD features original compositions by Harbison, Alexander, and Bremen plus compositions by Andy Laverne, Steve Swallow, and Bloomington's legendary favorite son Hoagy Carmichael.
