O.K ..Here's an "overview" you are sure to enjoy:This is "NOT JUST" a great collection of Baseball Tunes, But there is a compelling story behind this CD album and the Title Song: "PLAYIN' BASEBALL"..A saga about two brother's from the State of Maine that excelled in "America's Favorite Pastime" from their early school days, all the way through high school and beyond, Both signing pro contracts the same day! "PLAYIN' BASEBALL" together on the same team at times and playing ball on different teams,as these brothers were three years apart in age..But in their younger days they both displayed enormous skills in Hitting and pitching! Playing in youth leagues(summers) and when they were free from their respective teams, they practiced together all the time..Both were pitcher/outfielders..The eldest,a first baseman at times and starred in that position also! Beginning at 7+ years of age (the oldest) talents were apparent,as he had quite a knack for pitching(excellent fastball)and "hitting with power"..with the younger brother tagging right along and learning the game often by emulating his brother,as they played ball almost every day when it diden't rain! and maybe even a few days when it did!..The oldest brother(from age 8-9)pitched three no-hitters with the Bobcats-Police Athletic League and recorded several low hit/high strikeout performances. and a "memorable game" in which he K'd all but one batter in a 6-inning game! He K'd over two out of three batters per game in the youth leagues!) He had elbow problems at a very young age due to using a curve ball too much in grade school! The youngest brother excelled in the 'PAL" and later starred for St. Louis(Parocial school league) tossing a couple of no-hitters(Averaged about 13-14 K's a game (7-inning games)and had several low hit shutouts and batted cleanup! *Special Note: *The youngest brother was recruited by the Auburn Asa's(Men's semi-pro league team) "on loan" from that St. Louis (Grammer school League team!) And pitched very well against players over "21 years old" ..he was only "14"! The eldest brother still pitched fairly well through high school, displaying "less velocity on his fastball" and became more of a "pitcher than a thrower"(playing more "outfield" then pitching)The younger brother diden't start pitching until he was around 13,which may have been a good thing,as he had such a natural overpowering(heavy) fastball , a curveball wasen't even needed in his arsonal. He later developed a "killer slider" that gave righties fits! The Brother's played for Edward Little High School(Auburn,ME.) The eldest, transferred from a (regional parocial school)to EL in 1964 and then the youngest joined him the next year(a transfer from the same parocial school.)both were exceptional athletes ..The eldest hit over 400 in his junior year and pitched well and went (4-1)his senior year as a pitcher and also played centerfield;his kid brother went "undefeated " (16-0) for his (three years) at Edward Little, overpowering the competition in almost every game and slugged (8) home runs in his senior year,(some tape-measured jobs!) Batted around 400 as a pitcher/outfielder)! He tossed three no-hitters and averaged nearly 16 K's a game and broke some school records. He K'd a record breaking "22 batters" on two occasions! Struck out about "two out of three batters on average" in his youth leagues up through high School! They both played American Legion ball and excelled as Pitcher/Outfielders..the youngest brother won most of his games in Legion Play;there home field was:(Pettingal Park..Auburn,ME.) the youngest once hit a wicked line drive 30-40 feet above the left field wall that broke a "sizable limb off of a tree" way above the wall, it was rising when it struck the limb!(Still talked about today) And more amazingly ..IMPORTANT FACT: He "hurled a **one-Hitter and a no-hitter with only "ONE DAY'S REST "in American Legion tournament play in Togus,ME.in 1966!" Nobody knows how many pitches he actually tossed over this "memorable weekend" in(Two-nine inning complete games?) 300,350,400 or more pitches? it was noted that "AFTER" pitching those two games( Friday & Sunday) and winning. They played a final playoff game for the championship and this hurler now (Anchoring down centerfield) "fans recall most vividly" his Firing the ball all the way to the plate.. "on the fly".. from the base of the center field wall!! ) over 320 feet away! Now that was truely "Amazing'! He was named most valuable tournament player by Major League scouts and local officials.**In High School and Legion play(combined ) he had an overall ** 29-4 record with an ERA around 1.50 and a 375+ BA. There are more stories, baseball Pictures, antedotes, within the pages of our 12-page CD Booklet..For example: How these two brothers signed professionally and played on the same rookie league team, after the youngest signed up(as a pitcher)a 4TH round pick of the Yankees in the Amateur baseball draft in 1967 just out of High school! The 1967 draft was considered one of the best drafts ever!! Learn about the younger brother going on to be named to several All Star teams(Various levels)(The oldest finished his career that year(1967) in Oneonta,N.Y. and he and his dad were the youngest brother's biggest supporters over his career! He went on to break many records in the minors along the way..Going 3-0 his first year in Oneonta,N.Y. Had an off year in 1968 before exploding onto the scene in 1969(Florids) He broke the "ALL TIME STRIKOUT RECORD"in the Florida State League 217 K's (Still stands today)..Most innings pitched (modern history Plus: *(196 innings pitched ..**17 complete games,(modern day record) 16-7 record 1.74 era..Plus..allowing only "ONE DINGER" all year long!! Named "pitcher of the month"(july) and at the end of the year named "pitcher of the year for "ALL A-BALL LEAGUES"!Then the next few years..went on to AA Manchester,NH & West Haven,Ct. and was an All Star there and in one game hurled an unbelievable "242" pitches to complete a 14 inning 3-2 win over Elmira,N.Y.(1971) (That record of pitches thrown will never be matched!")After being promoted to the Majors in 1972, because he went 14-6 and won "11 games in a row" .Logging 191 innings..181 K's..11 complete games & a 2.54 Era..at West Haven,Ct. His team won the Eastern League's championship that year-1972(He was Named Right-Handed Pitcher of the Year (AA Award for all like Leagues) with manager Bobby Cox, Now Braves Mgr.... He pitched only a short time in the majors..You' ll find out "WHY"? this All Star pitcher's career was cut short(not by injury)But,you'll learn the "real reason" this talented right-handed Side-winder played most of his career in the minors?? What did he have in common with "Sandy Koufax,"Branch Rickey"and Christy Mathewson?) Most experts believed this "pitcher in question" would have been an AllStar in the major Leagues!(Who knows? Maybe even a Hall of Famer!) P.S. Trivia question: "Who was the last pitcher to get a hit before the Designated Hitter Rule went into effect in 1972"? (If you haven't fiqured out(who this pitcher is yet?.."this hint" is a dead givaway!) and this righty ended up with eight seasons in the minors with three stints in the winter leagues and before getting a major league look! Reading the CD booklet you'll note his major league career was brief, but showed a lot of promise! *This pitcher almost NEVER missed his "pitching turn" in his eight years of professional baseball , in fact he was the "ACE" of the staff on all the teams he played on (He pitched with only 3-days rest many times) **Noteworthy..he pitched on "short rest" most of his career!! You'll also learn more about his conquests in the "winter leagues" pitching in "Puerto Rico" and "The Dominican Republic"! Learn about a No-hitter and a 2-hitter.. The latter was 2-0 win (2-hit shutout over 8-innings,7 K's against the likes of Cey,Baylor,Beniquez,Ruiz,Woods,Crawford, Hendricks ,etc.and outduled major leaguer "Doyle Alexander"for the win!(He hit 2-4 in the game to boot!)Plus some other good action reports from the islands.! Even the Great "Orlando Cepeda" spoke up one time..After this pitcher collected three straight hits and upon reaching first base for the third time!! Cepada Quipped ..."What the heck are you doin' pitchin' son?) O.K. you're probably near the end of the "30 second song" previews of our 12-song CD! I hope you've enjoyed it, along with the above "AMAZING STORY"! Get your copy today!! P.S. This hurler was inducted into Baseball's "MAINE HALL OF FAME" (1986)and a year later entered the LEWISTON/AUBURN,ME. Hall!you can find his "BALL"(in Cooperstown)it was "Hit" off (Jim Lonborg) 1972,as "This righty was the "last pitcher to get a Hit before the "DH Rule" his ball is displayed right along side of former Yankee first baseman(Ron bloomberg's) bat in Cooperston,OH..(The first "batter up" under the new rule)**Pitcher is? : "LARRY GOWELL" brother of artist: Ace Diamond aka "Rich Gowell"
