简介

DOUG MUNRO has a catalog of eight CDs as leader and over thirty more as arranger, producer and sideman. Always a pick by critics for his "unassuming virtuosity" (JazzTimes), Doug continues to push the envelope stylistically and artistically. Offering fans cutting-edge yet accessible "jazz-fusion with a hint of bebop and more modern-sounding jazz excursions" (All Music Guide), critics and colleagues such as Mike Stern, Ray Vega, Harvie Swartz, Steve Khan, Lonnie Smith and David "Fathead" Newman have been praising Doug Munro for years. Doug has been a "bubbling under" player in the NY and international music scene for over 15 years. His release, UP AGAINST IT (CMG Records) was recorded with his popular trio, II-V-I (2-5-1). Called "never predictable" and "a gem," Doug offers seven of his own new charts while demonstrating his sophisticated arranging chops with select jazz standards. Doug has two NAIRD awards for his arranging and production work on PEOPLE GET READY: A TRIBUTE TO CURTIS MAYFIELD, and THE SKATILITES 30th anniversary album, HI-BOP SKA. He received two Grammy nominations for his work with the Skatilites on HI-BOP SKA and GREETINGS FROM SKAMANIA. Munro also did orchestration work for the soundtrack recording from the movie WHEN WE WERE KINGS, which won an Oscar for Best Documentary film 1997. A devout advocate of education for musicians and artists, Munro created and for 10 years headed the Jazz Studies Program at The Conservatory of Music at Purchase College. His faculty includes Todd Coolman, Jon Faddis, John Riley and Ralph Lalama. Munro filmed an instructional video, IMPROVISATION: JAZZ AND THE BLUES, available on Homespun Tapes. Munro's book, "Jazz Guitar: Swing to Bebop" (Warner Bros.) won the Music and Sound Retailers award for Best New Music Instruction Book for 2000. His second book, "Jazz Guitar: Bebop and Beyond" (Warner Bros.) was released to critical acclaim in 2002.
