Not a lot of jazz bassists use the bow as a part of their solo voice, or as a part of their general approach to the instrument. I've always felt that it is a unique color and voice in jazz relating to the "violin" aspect of the bass violin. Over the many years of my playing career I've developed an approach and a voice with the bow. In the last few years I've been traveling internationally and garnering attention from audiences from my arco playing. That lead me to the inspiration to make this record. I had never thought of highlighting that aspect of my playing before. I had always been focused on my composing. Which I also am showcasing on this cd. But before recent tours, and some gracious features and arrangements written to spotlight my arco playing. I had not realized that I do indeed know a good number of tunes that I have been playing and developing over many years. And considered putting out as a particular part of my artistic voice. It has been an interesting, and fun revelation!

Sonically I wanted to approach the recording process in the old style of a live in studio performance. i did not want to do a lot of production, and multi-tracking, nor isolation of instruments for that matter. We recorded at the beautiful studio in the Klavierhaus in Manhattan. Every one in the same room, with some sound proofing. I wanted to achieve the sense of interaction, and empathy that is created in a live performance. I was striving for the warmth and energy of so many of the classic jazz recordings that we love, and from which we find so much inspiration. With that are the risks of mistakes, maybe some rough edges, but the spirit and sound of those recordings are the things we still go back to listen to reconnect with what we all identify as the exemplars of jazz. I do not claim to be, or recreate a jazz classic, but that was my sonic inspiration for this cd. I'm happy, and proud of how this recording turned out. I'm incredibly grateful to Brian and Kyoko for their wonderful performances. We did all nine tunes in five hours! I hope that you enjoy what we have to share with you in this recording!
