简介

CD liner notes: Jazz is a unique phenomenon. Like jazz, classical music also has a tradition of improvisation– one that goes back long before the advent of sound recording. We can only wonder what the proverbial fly on the wall heard when Mozart, Handel, or Schubert improvised. Debussy was also known to improvise for hours before writing down his music. Jazz musicians are connected to these classical composers in deep ways, with parallel artistic lives in many aspects. Erik Satie played gigs in Montmartre cabarets, leaving in the small hours of the morning carrying a large hammer in his jacket to defend himself against street thieves. This is not unlike a Philly jazz gig today! But with all the similarities between the lives of jazz musicians and classical composers, I've never heard of contemporaries like Bach, Handel and Purcell improvising together in an ensemble. That would have been a nice band! As much as I love written classical music, the collective improvisation feature of ensemble jazz gives it an edge of spontaneity and surprise that is uniquely modern and powerful. From my point of view, my bandmates are essentially composing parts of the album with each solo they take. Jazz involves trust in a different way than traditional composition. All of the songs on this album were written imagining these specific players performing them, players I deeply trust and admire. So, thank you, band, for going way beyond my imagination. Special thanks to recording engineer Glenn Ferracone for capturing the music and being such an integral part of the vision, and to all of my family, friends, church family, teachers, and UArts colleagues and students who have encouraged me. I am deeply indebted to the music composed by J.S. Bach, Maurice Ravel, Hector Berlioz, Lukas Foss, Claude Debussy, Igor Stravinsky, Chick Corea, Bill Evans, Herbie Hancock, Pat Metheny, Lyle Mays, and Miles Davis. I have adored their music for years, and spent most of my life being carried away by it as a listener and fan. They made me want to be a musician, and encouraged me to create my own music. Over half of the tunes on this album have some sort of biblical inspiration, so my very deepest thanks go to the Author of life. While my early adult life was a journey into the world of music, in recent years by diving into God's word I have discovered the Creator of all creativity and infinitely more. "My heart stands in awe of your words" (Ps. 119:161). Beethoven and Wayne Shorter were his ideas, and so were lightning bugs and galaxies. I found God patiently waiting to be the answer to every question. I didn't think knowing him like this was possible. This has been the Deeper Journey.
