简介
Born in Cold Lake, Alberta, and moved at an early age to the bustling global hub of Dubai, Maddie Storvold is no stranger to an eclectic lifestyle. She spent her youth travelling and playing music in bars and hostels all over the world, from Toronto to Thailand, Amsterdam to South Africa, and many places in between. Despite her nomadic upbringing, this emerging singer-songwriter places great importance on growing into her career as a distinctly Canadian artist. Storvold has a background as a spoken word poet, and a degree in Literature and Philosophy, allowing for striking nuance and depth in her lyrics. With that poignant lyricism, as well as emotive finger picking, and a honeyed, impassioned voice, Storvold's music seeks to tell us a story, to move us, and to touch a fragile part of the human spirit. Storvold makes an immediate impression with the range and purity of her voice, which is often compared to Joni Mitchell, Jewel, and Eva Cassidy. Moreover, her storytelling ability, complexity of melodies and melancholy poetic depth convey maturity far beyond her 22 years. Having arrived in Edmonton just 10 months earlier, Storvold made a quick impact on the city at open stages and public showcases, culminating to the sold out release party of her debut album, The Old Brag Of My Heart, on June 2, 2017. The young artist muses, "This album is the manifestation of a very sad time in my life: the death of a friend, the loss of a love, the end of my parents' marriage, and a sustained period of listless loneliness. The title, "The Old Brag Of My Heart", is an excerpt from a Sylvia Plath book that I found in a secondhand bookstore in London, ON: "I took a deep breath and listened to the old brag of my heart: I am, I am, I am". I remember putting the book down right there in the store and listening to my heart after reading that, feeling very alone. I am proud that this piece of art could emerge from something so dark. I hope that it provides people with some kind of solace, comfort, and most importantly, hope". On the methodology of the album, Storvold explains, "My greatest fear in the recording process was that I would create something inauthentic. My grandma’s kettle goes off in “Anchored, Weightless”. I sampled an infomercial for “Loneliness Is A Sweater Set”. I recorded “Mothers, Daughters, Sisters, Friends” in the living room of the acreage where I spent my summers growing up. Each song has its own unique sonic seal. I was seeking to impose a sense of spontaneity and realism – my hope being that my songs remained as deeply entrenched in the living world on the recording as they were in their initial actualisation".
