Alan Weeks has had a storied career on Broadway and in film. Mike Romeling is a veteran of Greenwich Village clubs in their heyday. They didn’t know each other decades ago but could have easily passed each other on busy New York City streets like two ships in the night. Now both living on a dead-end mountain road upstate, the two took long walks and talked about music and life. Eventually they decided to play—it made sense to: Weeks brought his voice and djembes while Romeling rolled in with his guitar, voice and bag of tunes. A match made in heaven. This 10-song recording starts out with Romeling’s “Your Own Heart.” Dark, delicious slide moans over the simple melody and penetrating percussion. The production values are raw, almost primitive, but here the chemistry of the two is immediately obvious and more important. Traditional “Sinnerman” finds the two trading verses with verve and soon Jerry Jeff Walker’s “Mr. Bojangles” is given an intense reading. Romeling’s own compelling “City Sirens” and “Too Long on the Midway” are strong enough to stand next to the other better known songs, which says a lot. “Stand by Me” has a clever, world music arrangement while a bluesy droning ride through Merle Kilgore and June Cash’s “Ring of Fire” is just what the doctor ordered. In the end, Weeks and Romeling aren’t very different at all. Both men have engaging voices, but even better, both are masterful storytellers. Both have great respect for what came before and both have their own way to say things and say them well. Interesting new twists to old songs author: Steve Collins Mike's colaboration with Alan Weeks has created an array of interesting new versions of familiar tunes. Weeks is especially strong on the classic Mr. Bo Jangles. Mike's undeniable song writing talent and skill with the guitar shine through as always. This a a CD recommended for anyone looking for something off the beaten track. Alan and Mike travel further along this path with "Crazy Town" and offer up their unique blend of high mountain folk blues. Kick back and take the trip with them--it's a ride to savor.
