And enjoy it I did as my mind drifted back in time to the 1940s and early 1950s when the powerful signal of radio station WCKY in Cincinnati brought me much happiness in the form of the greatest recorded country and bluegrass music ever played. Host Nelson King’s big, friendly voice carried loud and clear to millions of listeners from the Florida Keys to South Texas and seemingly everywhere else from 8:05 until midnight Eastern time, Monday through Friday at the 1350 spot on our old RCA “Globetrotter” receiver. The Gillis Brothers’ Hard Driving Bluegrass Band includes bassist Andy Dye and fiddler Owen Saunders. The group’s growing repertoire of their own song material adheres rigidly to the “mountain style” that is hauntingly reminiscent of bands such as West Virginia’s Lonesome Pine Fiddlers and Virginia’s Stanley Brothers. For a few memorable minutes the Gillis Brothers recalled my youth when mostly southern-born country boys were recording raw, unpretentious bluegrass music, much of which is now viewed as masterpieces that will continue to endure. The Gillis Brothers’ plaintive, soulful music is a classic study in purity, spareness and intensity that captures the rapt attention of many audiences for whom they entertain each year.
