Loss is nothing else but change, and change is Nature's delight. ~Marcus Aurelius "From Whence We Came" is the newest release from acclaimed trumpeter and producer Andrew Baham. His second release as a leader, he features music from a period in his life where most people would be the most peculiar place to be inspired to write music. "I had just lost my father, sister, and grandfather all in a period of about nine months", says Baham. "Even though I was in a depressed state, somehow the melodies for these songs came into existence. At that point, I knew it had to be divine intervention. So I got my pen and pad and everything flowed. It was amazing." The album features original compositions from Baham. "Lil' Drew (forAndrew Jr)", is a groovesque ode to his father. "He was the one introduced me to jazz. He had a record collection that went to the ceiling in our house. Ironically, the first album I checked out was Louis Armstrong and Earl Hines. He also had Ramsey Lewis and Grover Washington Jr. My ears and mind were opened by him". "A Sister's Song (for Shelley)", was inspired by the passing of his sister. "Shelley was a very independent person with and vibrant soul. Even though she was pretty quiet, she always managed to make her presence felt. She was just an all around cool person..." "A Wise Man Speaks (for Andrew Sr)" is a testament to his grandfather's presence in his life. "My paw-paw was a man of very few words, yet I loved to be around him. Whether it just to watch baseball games, or spend the night so he could make me his big breakfast (laughs). But whenever he spoke to me, it was always a golden opportunity to learn something valuable in life's journey. That's what I miss most about him." Baham also features a composition by the late Donny Hathaway ,"Flying Easy", pianist Patrice Rushen's "Shortie's Portion", and the late drummer Tony Williams' "Sister Cheryl".
