The original concept / band name for All People was “All People Translate Pure Unfiltered Emotion”. This is a set of words that tries to describe what the band would be for us; a conduit for us to express our feelings and emotions. The statement is a kind of mantra or spiritual belief that also touches on the idea that we as a band wholeheartedly believe that there is a pure and common energy that exists within and connects all human beings. Music happens to be our method of self expression within the context of this common energy, but each person has their own unique way of expressing what’s in their hearts. Daniel Ray and Greg Rodrigue co-founded New Orleans based Community Records. They started the label in 2008 after having worked together in bands they were in around that season in life. In many ways the work that Community Records does plays directly into the music and ambition of the musical project All People. The bands on Community Records, the shows and tours we organize, and the ethos of the label are synergistic with the band. Rob and Josh started playing together five years ago in a band called New Lands. Both of them saw eye to eye with the state of alternative music in New Orleans at the time; agreed it was lacking an aggressive flavor that wasn’t just generic slow southern metal. Their song writing style focuses less on verses and choruses and more on moods and sporadic moments. This process transferred well when Josh joined All People. It helped freshen the songs in a way that allowed All People to push itself into new skin. Rob has played drums with Greg since 2009. They were in a punk band called The Rooks. However, their relationship formed in High School when Greg was a senior and Rob was a freshman. “I always admired Greg’s presence in the music scene. He was the first person to give me a flyer for a punk show and from that moment I wanted to be involved in some way. I started a band just to play shows with his band. Things came full circle when I was able to actually play drums with him.” All People is an amalgamation of their personal and musical connection that has helped them grow in both respects.
