简介

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE New Music for Cancer Research Jazz musician’s son captures Dad’s memory in song All profits to Cancer research SYDNEY, Australia— Monday, 16 March 2009,—For two generations now, the name ‘Barnett’ has been synonymous with Australian jazz. First to come was Cliff Barnett, bassist and stalwart of the movement throughout the 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s. Barnett continued to play whenever he could until his very sad passing to cancer in 2006. Filling the very big shoes left by his Dad, Dan Barnett has produced a CD zinging with the sort of talent that can only come from age, experience and experiment. In tribute to his much loved and much exalted father, Dan has brought together some of Cliff Barnett’s old mates who just happen to be some of the most recognized and respected jazz musicians Australia has produced over the last 50 years, Aside from the personal catharsis a recording such as this will provide for Barnett Jr, this CD contains a wonderful selection of jazz standards re-uniting stars such as Chuck Morgan, Ed Gaston and Pat Caplice, with Dan doing his thing alongside. It was due to the enormous respect Dan and his father have in the industry that musicians such as Metronome poll winner 1958 Vibraphonist Pat Caplice emerged from retirement to play and arrange for one of the three groups on this unique tribute. Caplice and Barnett snr recorded together in the late 50s and remained mates ever since. The Pat Caplice Group, of which Cliff was a member, was nominated for several Metronome awards and was one of the first Australian groups ever to receive mention in the US Jazz magazine Downbeat, way back in 1957. Other notables offering it up are bassist, Ed Gaston, who has played with Dizzy Gillespie and Sarah Vaughan, Stephan Grappelli, George Cables, popular UK drummer, Cyril Bevan, who was formerly Winifred Atwell’s MD and a member of the house band at London’s “Talk of the Town” for over 20 years; .in demand guitarist, Chuck Morgan, pianist Peter Locke, Sydney drummer Andrew Dickeson and Sydney Symphony Orchestra cellist David Wickham, complete the lineup. A special arrangement by American Bob Montgomery for the Dan Barnett Big Band of Benny Golson’s “I Remember Clifford” pretty much says it all. Tying this superb bundle together is Dan Barnett himself, playing his trombone, singing and producing with his usual commitment. The significance however this time cannot be overlooked: Cliff Barnett left behind a legacy of jazz and joy and it’s one that Dan and Cliff’s mates celebrate with style. In memory of Cliff Barnett, profits from the sale of the CD go to cancer research namely Bill Walsh Cancer Research Laboratories. "We have an excellent reputation for innovative cancer research,” says Professor Ross Davey, Director of the Bill Walsh Cancer Research Laboratories.
