Beginning at the age of 15 years old, Kaylan Mackinnon began writing songs in the bedroom of her Ontario country home. Shortly after, she decided to release her original material and cover videos online. Within a year, Mackinnon attracted over 30,000 subscribers and 300,000 views, which have continued to rise daily. By the time Mackinnon was 18, she had been nominated by a panel of jurors, of which included Juno-nominated singer-songwriter Jully Black, for Best Young Songwriter in the Toronto International Music Awards (TIMA). She then started working with former NEVEREST band member, Mike Klose, who is now a Toronto-based producer. Together, they released Mackinnon's first single titled 'Down To You' in the summer of 2013, which received high praise from her supporters. Now, at the young age of 21, Mackinnon placed as one of the Top 10 musicians for the Worldwide Hard Rock Rising Contest in March of 2014, where she was flown to perform at the famous Hard Rock Cafe in the heart of downtown Toronto. Following just a few months later, she was accepted into the 2014 Canadian Music Week Festival, where she had the opportunity to perform at the Cadillac Lounge in Toronto, and attend conferences, as well as learn and network with industry professionals. With the end of 2014, Mackinnon teamed up with producer-writer and owner of Vancity Records Jordy Birch and together had their song titled 'I'm the Captain' in the VIFF and TIFF independent feature film 'Preggoland.' As the new year is just around the corner, Mackinnon has just finished up a couple of new songs and is currently in studio prepping for the release of her 2015 debut album. In the meantime, she is attending the University of British Columbia, where she will be applying to the Creative Writing Program in March 2015. "I've always loved being on stage, and performing my own material to audiences is just the cherry on top," says Mackinnon. "I wouldn't give up writing my own songs for anything. When people reach out to me and tell me how much they loved that one song or how they really related to it, well that's the best feeling in the world."
