“The sign of gathering” – Composer's notes

The piano quintet “The sign of gathering” was written around March 2009, and slightly revised in June 2011, reworking and completing an unfinished piece for piano and violin originally commissioned in June 2008 by Valerio Marchitelli, friend and former member of Piccola Accademia degli Specchi, sadly passed away prematurely in June 2010. As for the treatment of the melodic lines and the organization of the musical material into a deliberately-tautological structure, I drew some inspiration from the instrumental arias by the 17th Century Italian composer Marco Uccellini. The piece is intended as a sort of energetic divertissement on the idea of gathering as collective response to a call, which is represented by the cumulative process that aggregates, combines and develops the various thematic cells.
