简介

On their third album, "Operator", The Weather Service brings their own spin to covers along with original music. The first track is a Jim Croche cover as well as the title track. The album keeps the rhythm and blues feel for a few tunes, and also soul-jazz. ABOUT THE SONGS: "Operator" was a song written by Jim Croche released in 1972. The Weather Service takes what was originally an acoustic folk rock tune and makes it rhythm and blues. "Unthinkable (I'm Ready)" was a song produced and partially written by Alicia Keys. This cover is more true to the original, save from being an instrumental. It uses effects on the piano, and harmonies in the style of the original. "Earth" is the first of three songs in The Weather Service Suite. The song was written to express a view of Earth from space as though in orbit. The introduction sounds are actually that of the Sputnik and a NASA transmission to a space shuttle orbiting the Earth. "Cold Front" offers an intermission piece between the first and third movements of The Weather Service Suite. It plays with major and minor for a brief, but groovy song. "Water" is the final installment of The Weather Service Suite; the groove is meant to portray the travel of a stream or other body of water. The Suit ends with a loud thunder crack. "Swed" was composed by Randy Kemp in his early twenties and doesn't spare the funk. Stormy Monday was originally written and performed by T-Bone Walker, but was made famous by The Allman Brothers Band. It is a classic blues and builds from a simple rhythm section groove to a full band with horns. "Miss Magic" is written in the style of Grover Washington, Jr. and prominently features the tenor saxophone backed up by brass and strings. "Gregily" is a tribute to the Weather Service's own Greg Packham. The song is very soulful and groovy. "Tomat" first appeared on The Weather Service's Album, "Feed the Fire" and features an organ trio. "Why Don't You (Let Me Love You)" is a pop tune written by Randy. Fifteen is a very energetic original featuring the hip styles of Matt Spencer. ABOUT THE STAFF RANDY KEMP Saxophonist, Pianist, Organist, Arranger, Executive Producer, Composer A leader of many different bands and player of many styles, Randy not only plays, but composes originals too. Randy also arranges pop tunes with a jazz twist. On "Operator", Randy creates a memorable production. "Kemp's cool light tone is reminiscent of the great Stan Getz... [Randy is] an excellent tenor-saxophonist, pianist and singer from the East Coast... "~Scott Yanow, Jazz Historian/Journalist GREG PACKHAM Guitarist Greg has contributed a lot to The Weather Service albums. Their previous album, "Another Groovy Mystery" not only features Greg's guitar playing, but also originals he's written. He was able to meet and play with notables like Jackie McLean, who wrote the liner notes for Packham's critically acclaimed first Album Action-Reaction on Stash Records, and featured Elvin Jones on Into The Frying Pan. The Returning Studio Staff Dave Hermantin is the go-to for creating foundational drum tracks with excellent stress on building the dynamics and fills. Gene Leone II plays a soulful blues guitar. Nick Rodriguez spices up the music with congas and aux percussion. Energetic drummer Matt Spencer adds creative drumming and unorthodox playing to The Weather Service's tracks. Doc Stephens holds the groove on bass. Tom Kean brings a fast and modern funk guitar into the mix. Kenny Ginsburg bangs away at those drums. Behind The Scenes Kemp and Packham have jointly produced individual songs, and the album Another Groovy Mystery. Nick Rodriguez assists in production and sound design. Erin Halpin, a photographer, has helped capture special band moments. Kemp also designs the album art and videos. And where would the band be without interns?
