简介

Steuart Pincombe, a strong advocate of both historical performance and new music, is focused on engaging audiences' minds in addressing the aesthetic value of art through innovative discussions and performances. Biography: Steuart Pincombe, holds Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from the Oberlin Conservatory of Music where he studied modern cello with Darrett Adkins and baroque cello and viola da gamba with Catharina Meints. Mr. Pincombe has appeared in solo and chamber music performances at leading American and European venues, including Boston Early Music Festival, The Kennedy Center, Carnegie Hall, MAfestival - Bruges, Utrecht Oudemuziek, Bach Festival Dordrecht, Mozart Festival Augsburg, and the Amsterdam Concertgebouw. His appearances as soloist with orchestra include repeated performances with such orchestras as the Springfield Missouri Symphony, The Oberlin Contemporary Ensemble, Apollo's Fire: The Cleveland Baroque Orchestra, and most recently the Wallfisch Band (UK). He has independently released two CDs of the complete Bach suites for solo cello and has recorded new music for the Centaur label. In addition to his many solo projects, he is currently a baroque cellist in the Holland Baroque Society, Apollo's Fire, The Wallfisch Band (UK), and modern cellist of Oerknal! - a contemporary music ensemble based in The Netherlands. As a teacher, Mr. Pincombe has given technique classes and master classes at such American institutions as Biola University, Gordon College, University of California Domingez Hills, Missouri State University (MSU) and the Westchester Conservatory; and guest lectures at MSU, Oral Roberts University, and the Oberlin Conservatory of Music. Mr. Pincombe plays a rare, original Carlo Antonio Testore baroque cello from 1727 on loan from the Jumpstart Jr. Foundation in Amsterdam and an anonymous, 18th century Flemish cello on loan from the collection of The Netherlands Musical Instrument Foundation. He and his wife Michelle reside in The Hague, The Netherlands. A Note from Steuart: "One of my primary goals as an artist is to share great music and thought provoking ideas gathered from that music with the many types of people that I come in contact with and not exclusively the usual classical concert goers. Classical music was once closely related to culture and people’s views of the world. It is no longer this way. We live in a consumerist culture dominated by constant media, rapidly changing fashion, short lived musical fads, and generally shorter attention spans. This is a problem for classical music that by nature demands that the listener engage with it by taking time to consider what the piece is communicating. How do we as classical music promoters address this problem and not only maintain our audiences but also gain new ones? We simply need to make the case that art and music are very valuable to human existence. This is probably best accomplished by explaining the music in a creative way that meets people where they are. We can gather a following through things that people know - advertising, programs with drama and visual stimulation, and choosing non-threatening locations that welcome a wide range of people (i.e. not always concert halls). This is not compromising, it is building a relationship with the audience. Music so often has something important to say and it is the performer's job to highlight what it is saying in a beautiful and captivating way." Steuart's Work with the Music of Bach: Steuart has presented numerous single concerts of the six Bach cello suites across the U.S. In January 2009, he released two compact discs of the suites recorded on modern cello. Steuart has dedicated several years of study to the problem of deciphering slurs in the six suites. His interpretation is informed by all the facsimiles of the cello suites, Bach’s manuscript of the 5th cello suite lute version, and Bach’s manuscript of the sonatas and partitas for violin.
