Selamawet is her full name, but she is Selam on stage and to her friends. This young Eritrean woman came to Europe, like many others like her, at the start of the Third Millennium. She is a poetess, a singer and an artist whose artistic gifts were cultivated in silence in the midst of the difficulties of her beloved land of Eritrea. In Rome the wounds of her dramatic journey towards hope were healed in the welcoming arms of the Baobab, a multicultural center, but also a place for magical encounters between the different people and cultures of the world. Here she was finally able to live peaceful and normal daily life and she soon discovered that her verses of poetry could be turned into songs. She started studying music and she developed all the fascinating shades of her voice. And from the roots of Selamawet the talent of Selam finally blossomed. Songs and thoughts of love veiled by the nuances of a great nostalgia for her homeland, and above all the story of a journey of migration told to the rhythms of the krar (a bowl-shaped lyre with five or six strings) and the kebero (a double-headed, conical hand drum), traditional instruments of Eritrea. Selam writes and sings the melodies of ancient Eritrean traditions, but she also tells of the encounter with western culture, of which she has been a part for many years now. The result is a double CD, the first with versions arranged in the manner of her land, the second CD arranged in a whole range of colourful styles, inspired by the many cultures that have influenced her during the years spent in the multicultural center Baobab of Rome, an association that welcomes and shelters refugees from all over the world, but mostly from the horn of Africa. The magic of this CD lies in the evocative and refined arrangements and Selam’s beautiful voice that truly seems to come from a far-off land. This is a new kind of music: Afro Nu.
