ULTRASOUND - Perth WA Rock Band Review of their self-titled debut album by Steve Makin Vox, Gtr - Shane Johnstone Gtr, vox - Stevie D Bass, vox - Dave Cooper Drums - Allister Aherne The U’s sound is a simple and direct hit to the melodic senses, with nothing overplayed, and no sound of an ego. Rhythmically tight and concise, the overall result is an infectious bunch of very good songs that instantly draw you in to their individual grooves. A touch of Crowded House in their sound, but maybe with a more abrasive edge from the guitar. The choice of voicings and tones is excellent. The lack of too many ‘out and out’ guitar solos makes it even more appealing. It sounds like Allister Aherne on drums would also be perfectly at home with a reggae, such are the snare fills. All rhythms drive forward with a purpose, and nothing is cluttered. The dynamics are all in the right place, with the rhythm section [inc. Dave Cooper on bass] combining fluidly and effectively. They form a solid platform and partnership from which the guitars and vocals can add the extra building blocks to the songs. Guitar duties are mainly handled by Stevie D, with Shane also undertaking parts while handling the vocals. Overall, with two obviously different styles and approach, the outcome is satisfying and works well with the songs in general. Stevie is obviously an accomplished player with a good feel for the songs and a creative mind for what will fit with the individual compositions. It all works well. Vocals are confident and the melodies work well with the underlying chord structures. The lyrics can be heard and the diction is near perfect. Harmonies are not overdone but blend in well with the overall mix. Shane has an appealing tone to his voice that is ideal for the songs in question, and his phrasing and sense of melody is the icing on top of what was a perfectly good cake in the first place. Bingo. As for the songs, the balance and running order works well, with the light and shade in the right places. Highlights have to be Only Heaven Knows, Hard to Find, and I Can’t Take It. All in all a successful debut from yet another Perth based combo, I wish them well. SM
