Generations: Mike & Aleksi Glick is a progressive urban folk group led by a father and son duo. If you can somehow imagine a group that is a cross between Joni Mitchell, Ray Charles and Pete Seeger, this is it! Other members are vocalist Joy Hanson and legendary latin percussionist Gene Golden. Their influences come not only from American folk traditions, but from urban blues, jazz, Afro-Cuban music and more. With many original songs written by Mike and Aleksi, some are set to works by poets such as Langston Hughes, as well as “found poems” from Chief Joseph and Joe Hill. Tributes and remembrances of cultural and political figures like Pablo Neruda, Lolita Lebron, Billie Holiday, Nelson Mandela, Victor Jara and Paul Robeson - and to their native New York City, with, yes, love songs and more personal lyrics, also are part of their program. Aleksi is a virtuoso jazz/blues and rock guitarist, Joy Hanson is a jazz vocalist at her core, Gene Golden has recorded and performed with such luminaries such as Dizzy Gillespie, Louis Armstrong, Celia Cruz, Eddie Palmieri, Willie Colon, Jerry and Andy Gonzalez and the Fort Apache Band. The group also features fine lead vocals by Mike and Joy and tight two and three part harmonies. Chris Owens, a Brooklyn-based songwriter who has also written reviews for The City Sun in NYC has said about the group, " if you loved the richness of the Woodstock concert, you’ll love Generations. The younger Glick is skilled and dazzling, reflecting great training and a variety of influences. Singer Joy Hansen provides the perfect vocal and visual complement to the Glicks and is the newest member of Generations. Her smooth and light-but-soulful soprano both blends and contrasts well with Mike Glick’s lead vocals."
