I’ve never quite known what to call our music. Unlike a lot of the other bands I’ve been in the Afflicted does not seem to easily fit any particular sound or genre. I know a lot of bands say that but I honestly don’t think I’ve ever heard a band that sounds like the Afflicted. Eric (the singer) and I had a previous band together and in that band three chords and some angry lyrics were standard for us. When our drummer moved away we decided we wanted to move in a different direction. We enlisted a couple of friends from school and started writing some songs in the fall of 1989. We tried but couldn’t find a drummer. At the time Eric and I were listening to a lot of early punk but wanted to do something more like the Cure (think 17 seconds). We started recording a demo ourselves on homemade equipment and settled on using the drum machine on William’s keyboard. We finished a short demo by the spring of 1990 and started selling it at school. We sold well over 100 copies, much to our surprise. We never did find a drummer and Eric moved away after school got out in the summer of 1990. We got together at the end of 1990 one more time and those songs are included at the end of this album. Sadly we never got back together again. So here it is: all of our recordings, remastered, EQ’d, bass restored. Again, the original equipment this was recorded on was very primitive but listening to it again I have a new appreciation for it. Enjoy. Travis Rainey, February 2016
