Plike is a solo project from Austin, TX based producer / composer Mad Madam Em. The sound of Plike is at once hauntingly beautiful and disturbingly dark, an eccentric layering of natural, organic sounds against heavy digital elements. It tells the story of Helen, the central character, who has been locked away in a psychiatric hospital and forced to undergo experimental treatments. Through several of the 47 personalities that live in Helen's mind, the trauma that Helen has endured is expressed through music. Plike's second EP, Empathetic Apathy, incorporates a variety of musical styles, including trap, witch house, and trip hop, as well as elements from genres such as dubstep and drum & bass. Fellow producer / composer ASH joined Em in the production of this album, and Em's signature childlike toy pianos, cinematic strings and ethereal vocal sampling join together with ASH's expert synthesis engineering and sequencing to form a strangely hypnotic dance of light and shadow. Empty Mirrors is Plike's third EP, and was inspired by Em's lifelong fascination with supernatural phenomena. Each track seeks to explore the things that haunt us, frighten us, and spark our sense of childlike wonder. A symphony of cinematic strings and exquisite vocal sequencing unite with a crescendo of gritty electronic drums, incorporating many sub-genres such as witch house, dubstep, dreampop, and trap.
