The quintet version of the Overture in C Minor was completed on 29 June 1811, and a fortnight later, by rearranging the viola parts, he began to make a quartet version, though this was abandoned at bar 217. As so often, a long time elapsed between completion and first public performance: in this case an extremely long time.
