When the members of the mighty New Hampshire band Turtlebone went their separate ways, it was only a matter of time before good friends David Steadman and James White relit the fires and started something new. That particular conflagration is Floodwatch, a heavy dose of rock Americana, where the dust bowl echoes of outlaw folk mesh with the gut-punch and bombast of hard rock. Floodwatch started as a trio with their eponymous debut. However, their drummer soon departed, leaving the writing partners to go through a period of writing and constant reinvention. At some shows, they turned up as an acoustic duo, with David singing lead vocals and playing baritone ukulele, tenor guitar, and six-string, and with James singing backup while thumping an upright bass or gospeling out on piano. Other shows saw a heavy industrial side, with the duo abusing electric instruments to a backdrop of a drum machine and synth atmospheres. In late March of 2012, the pair made the leap and found drummer Rob Richard, fresh off a stint with prog-folk band Another Divide. He was immediately thrown into the deep end with gigs and the recording of basic tracks for Floodwatch’s sophomore record, Lost, Tired, Sick, and Sad. The record is a document of the band’s trials and triumphs, from the quasi-industrial backing beat of “Singing Breath”, the piano and vocal duo sparseness of “Let Me Believe” and “Lord Give Me Time”, to the full-on assault of “Circle the Wagons”, “Protect Me” and “Be My Woman”. As many fans of have emphatically stated, Floodwatch is a rare band with its own sound, the many hues of which shimmer and crackle from track to track on Lost, Tired, Sick, and Sad.
