Billed as an anti-shuffle record, this is a defiantly different release from an artist of which little is known or offered. Whilst the album comprises eleven tracks these are offered in two eighteen minute parts all blended together with ambient sounds either drifting through the studio window or recorded separately near the artists base in Hackney, East London. \rThis is a stripped down acoustic recording with only three tracks having additional accompaniment of guitar and organ. Most tracks are written by the artist and deal with love, death and alienation. Clearly a well read character, Brown also cites the influence of Russian literature in his work. This is not an album which will grab you and leave you with catchy riffs but it does have magnetic appeal and given time will grow on the listener. If there is a criticism it is that the songs are of similar style and tempo, and it is no surprise that the stand out track is a cover of Arthur Lee’s “Five String Serenade” which, whilst not an upbeat number as such has an extra gear to the other tracks. \rFor followers of Leonard Cohen and that genre, this will hit a chord, for others this album will take some getting into although this is clearly an artist with much to offer.
