There are a number of reasons why this album is special. First, recording an entire program of songs, live, “direct-to-tape” was very exciting. It was exciting and risky at the same time, because there was little opportunity to go back and fix performances, tempos, pitch, buzzes, thumps, “twin” notes created by the piano soft pedal shifts (and there are a couple), etc. I’m amazed at the results and grateful to this team of legendary professionals who gave their best to make this recording happen so beautifully. Second, pursuing a more ambitious collaboration with Scott Reed seemed to be a natural next step from the work this extraordinary musician friend and I had done in the past. Third, to work again at Capitol with my brother Nino Ocampo and multi-grammy winner Al Schmitt, legendary musicians Peter Erskine, Chuck Berghofer, Ramón Stagnaro, Dean Parks, Paul Leim, Joe Soldo and Coco Trivisonno was simply a thrill. Forth, to write my first song lyric (In The Morning) and record it was a beautiful gift. Lastly, to have the opportunity to pay tribute, at least with part of the repertoire, to two giants of sacred music who passed away in the not so distant past: George Beverly Shae (It Took A Miracle, Until Then, How Great Thou Art) and Andraé Crouch (Through It All, My Tribute).
