The surprise success of the Salzburg Festival 2006 - a year otherwise dominated by Mozart - was a world première, the 'rebirth' of a relentless, radical music drama about love and (juvenile) violence. Henze had extended it musically, and it had been translated into the language of the Japanese novel upon which it was based.
