Darkness, ecstasy, lust, theology, rave, mysticism, postmodernism, desire, dubstep, pentacostalism, difference, orgies, Deleuze, phenomenology, electronia. What do these have in common? And what does music, based on these concepts, sound like? These are the themes I will explore in this project, under my own name - Jonatan Bäckelie. My debut single is written by Englishman Lewis Taylor and enigmatically called “Song”. Lewis debuted well in his thirties, which to me is a great statement to the fact that a debut is never really a debut. It is always just a bump in the road, or a cross on the map. Both Lewis and I have been a fair few places, and so the debut is more than anything a new vantage point, a new perspective, from which we can look upon things, and from which we can share new perspectives with others. To me personally, this is perhaps the best song ever written. The reason for covering it is twofold. The first reason is that the song deserves more attention. The second is that the epic ending is too short. But not this time, it’s not. My take is permeated with dark, mystic elements, with a crescendic ending that loops on a mantra that encourages getting lost in the music. Although a lovesong, it builds on the ideas of being both weak and strong, not knowing who you are to the fullest, not being finished, but a subject/object in movement or flux, that can be moved into a million different positions. The homage to Lewis Taylor, who has had a tremendous impact on my music life, seems a good vantage point to restart from. And from this vantage point we can be moved, transformed, destabilised even, by lovers and Gods.
