'the fly', a seventies child, has drawn from the world of 'blaxploitation', erotica cinema, Bond films, and kung fu flicks, seamlessly fused to create a new and unique brand of Funk. However, after a long hiatus, ‘the fly’ is back!! He has decided to not, literally, give up the funk, and has returned with a soon to be released sophomore album, “Flytrap: Revenge and the Urge to Fly which has just been completed and will be released in February 2015. This time he utilizes the rich & unique talent of his hometown of Calgary, with the likes of artists Joanna Borromeo (a 2013 Juno nominee for the R&B category), hiphop wizards Blist (the iconic duo Sabo Forte & Tron…notoriously known from the movie Fubar), the silky soul voices of Sonal and Kyemara. And soon, with ‘the fly’s’ new ensemble of FLYTRAP (a 7-piece groove machine) will be touring, delivering these sounds directly into your ear holes. With a dark blend garnished by the likes of Sly & the Family Stone, the early funk of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Prince, Beastie Boys, Jamiroquai and P-Funk, the Flytrap sound is a lethal elixir of groove. While ‘the fly’ is quick to downplay the ‘Guru of Funk’ label thrust upon him by his followers, he does approach his music as a sort of spiritual mission: “The purpose of the Flytrap project is to blend tones, assemble a group of versatile musicians in one room to create a music [that is] dark, fresh and new, to create music that not only breaks down musical barriers but unites musical genres.” He plans on bringing the Funk back into the forefront. In a nutshell, ‘the fly’ is going to start a buzz.
