Invisible Me One day as I was brushing past a mirror at home, I got freaked out at seeing my reflection in the mirror, and I got rid of all the mirrors in my place. It was a fearful portrait of myself; failing to conceal the truth that I was thinking of giving up my music – perhaps that’s what bothered me. It was the time when this fear turned me to be invisible. Telecaster It only took me a split second to decide the title of this song to be a specific guitar brand, Telecaster. I remember becoming over the moon after purchasing a cheap guitar which had a very similar look to Telecaster. Later on, when I had enough savings, I eventually bought a Telecaster guitar for myself. How excited and happy I was – I gave a name, FenFen, to my guitar and kept it in my arm whenever I went to bed, sharing my duvet together. But I had to sell my Telecaster to continue working on my music. I still remember how upset I was and how much I shed tears. It was painful to face an empty space next to my bed where the guitar used to be placed. I arranged this song with EDM to enhance the ironical situation I was in and also wanted to make sure that the first intro of this song does start with the sound of the guitar. A Four-Leaf Clover I remember going up to a stage which was set up at a small motorway service station. And I still remember how overwhelmingly high the stage felt and how low I felt about myself on that day. As I came down from the stage, running away from the place while a hollowness hit me hard, there was a lady who stopped me to hand a four-leaf clover. ‘A Four Leaf Clover’ is a song I worked on reminiscing about that evening and appreciating the genuine warmness I felt. To Me At some point in my life, I started to realise that I was becoming hugely self-critical. Any mistakes I make meant the entire world might collapse on me and anything I manage to do well meant I could breathe again with such a relief. It is also a signature of my determination, reaching out to myself, saying, “Let me get excited to find out what the future holds for me. Bedroom Singer For me this song is an autobiography as I worked on to render the way how I felt when I prepared and sang my cover songs in my bedroom each and every time – a story that I have never brought up to anyone. ‘Bedroom Singer’ is my small yet heartful gift to anyone who is dreaming of a better future from their small private place or wherever you are. The Hare I had a chance to read the well-known ‘The Hare and the Tortoise’ again when I picked it up from a dental clinic where they have storybooks for kids. Unlike how I grasped the story before, on this particular occasion, I felt the hare is under tremendous pressureto win as everyone watching the race presumes that of course she would win. I felt for the hare and thought she is very alike me in that perspective. It might be then, well certainly it is the case, that the hare has been running with no break whatsoever until she got to the starting line of the race and all she wants is a little break. I wanted to tell the hare in the story that, “You are not following time or rules that someone else set up for you but believing in your speedy feet and appreciating the laid-back attitude, at least in this race. Before I Met You My gardeners once asked me, “Why do you always tend to compose melancholy love songs, J.Fla?” It is likely the gardeners may not have noticed by then how astonished I was when this question was given to me. I was totally intrigued by the question and it made me think about the reason a lot. This song, ‘Before I Met You’ is my faithful answer to that question – a question that is meaningful, and carries a heavy gravity yet, for me, a difficult one to answer.
