简介

"How would you describe your music?" Autostraddle asked SHIRA in an interview, to which she answered, "The ocean tearing away at a cliff. A small gun, but when the trigger is pulled it shoots seaweed, stars, and honey. A murder of crows whose flight is controlled by a woman’s anger/hunger/light." In Hebrew SHIRA means song and poem. Born in Israel, living in Brooklyn, SHIRA is a songwriter, producer, writer and visual artist. She was appropriately dubbed a "Renaissance person" by Deli Magazine who recently named her one of NYC's Best Emerging Artists of 2016. Flooring critics with her enigmatic, unique sound, she's garnered praise for her "awe-inspiring songcraft" (Boston Hassle) and the ability to "blend genres like soul, folk and electronic pop with a painter's touch" (Deli). She's shared stages with CocoRosie, Mirah, TuNe-YaRdS and Andrea Gibson. A three time Pushcart Prize nominee, her work has been published in PBS Poetry, Buzzfeed Reader, The Huffington Post, BUST Magazine, B**ch Magazine and The Massachusetts Review, among others, as well as alongside Patricia Smith in 'Bull-Gouging the Matador', in the anthology 'Courage: Daring Poems for Gutsy Girls' and the Lambda award winning LGBTQ anthology 'Glitter and Grit.' She received a Millay Colony Fellowship and a James Merrill Fellowship from the Vermont Studio Center. Known for her personally political work, her boundless creativity in multiple realms and a sonic inventiveness that verges on the transcendent, she has been described by Bust Magazine as "an out of body experience...listening to her makes me want to connect with every woman on the planet." Her latest album 'Subtle Creature' features collaborations with Shannon Funchess of Light Asylum, sister-trio Joseph, Western Mass powerhouse Mal Devisa, soul singer Jamila Woods and New York music scene giant Neon Music. From an EP recorded on a four-track on her bedroom floor when she was 18 to laying down her most recent full studio album, she has been creating music for over a decade, with over a handful of self-released albums under her belt. Each project is more sophisticated, undeterred by trends and unafraid to take leaps into the unknown. Inspired by creators such as Yoko Ono, Nina Simone, Kate Bush and Diane Cluck, SHIRA evades the comfort zone, "successfully evolving her sound on each project" (Deli) with nearly spiritual devotion. As described in an interview with B**ch Magazine, she chooses not to separate her creative outlets and identity, instead seeing them as being in conversation with each other, "each genre as a mouth speaking to the other." Multidimensionality is at the root of SHIRA and her music, which is unapologetically dynamic, defiant of the prescriptive and unabashedly joyful in the midst of a tumultuous world. As a Queer, mentally ill and immigrated woman she steps into conversation, not just contemplation; into active engagement, not just performance. Out to make the world a more equitable, safe place, her conscious citizenship cannot be divorced from her creative self. Of what inspires her, she says, "Surprise, not knowing. There is a need, a bubble that wants to rise to the surface of me and pop. Inspiration, in and of itself, is enough. It doesn’t need to be 'because of' something. That burning delight, that feeling, is gold. The texture of sound, a beat that is thick and sharp like an onion, can be enough to get me going for hours." She adds to this a sense of urgency, "There’s a way we need each others’ sounds, that we hunger to know what is inside of one another. I want to dig, dig, dig and share what I find...with the listener...in hopes that someone’s most-innerness will perk up at a particular tone. They will somehow feel seen. How strange! I am almost desperate to see my insides."
