简介

Another major addition to our Russian Archives series. These 7 CD's show all facets of Daniel Shafran's genius. This cellist who started out as a child prodigy was initially taught by his father and had a unique poetic and sincere way of making music. His vibrato, phrasing and virtuosity all added to his especially passionate performances. Repertoire from J.S. Bach (4 of the solo suites) to Schnittke (Suite in the old style). As customary in this series some music virtually unknown in the West is also included. For example the Romance by Nikolai Rakov and Melody by Vladimir Vlasov. Shafran made quite a number of concert tours and recordings together with his first wife, pianist Nina Musinyan, who accompanies him on several pieces on these CD's as well. This set includes some very special recordings like the Shostakovich cello sonata with the composer himself at the piano, and the first Kabalevsky cello concerto with the composer conducting. Recordings made between 1948 and 1982.
