TEMUJIN BIOG: It’s been a hectic year for the 5 Teesside tunesmiths that make up indie rock outfit Temujin. The band are made up of the remnants of local Teesside legends Myormay who showed early promise with lead singer Kong aged just 17, catching the attention of the late and great John Peel. (“I was having a meal in Chinese restaurant in Teesside and this guy sat next to me with his guitar and started singing, I thought here we go. Then this beautiful voice came out. I would have put him on Meltdown (festival), but alas, it was too late..” Time Out Magazine). Following a university sabbatical and a new line up, they played their first show stopping performance at the legendary Empire Theatre in the autumn of 2009 and have been gigging at a manic pace ever since, supporting the likes of Sound of Guns, Twisted Wheel, Delays, Detroit Social Club, The Chapman Family, Dirty Weekend, Young Rebel Set and Jimmy & the Sounds. In an world where bands have become obsessed with ‘style’ in the hope of cutting a record deal, Temujin have focused on the most important thing. In Temujin's world the song is king. As with every great band you can forget about the rhetoric, the hyperbole and the haircuts, it is all about the tunes and it is something that Temujin have in abundance. The word anthem is not taboo in the Temujin camp. Listen to the battle cries of ‘Fire in the Sky’ and ‘13’ and you will remember how you felt the first time you heard ‘Live Forever’ ‘Just’, or 'Song 2'. Constrast this with the grungier ‘ Someone Stop Me’ and S.L.Y. sounding something like the messed up love child of The Kills mixed with The Knack’s My Sharona. You are starting to get the idea. With additional influences ranging from The Manics, Damon Albarn, the Killers, Smashing Pumpkins, Radiohead and Nirvana, they have a sound that skirts the dirty line between indie pop and grunge rock. These are songs that are meant to be sung to the rafters.
