Originally begun in 2003 and dusted off and completed in 2017, "Unfinished Business" is a long-overdue collection of original songs by Eric Thompson--a rangy, diverse set of musings on love, loss, living and dying and more importantly, coming to terms with it all. Minimal, spartan and punchy, these tracks offer a glimpse into the deft songwriting and lyrical stylings that Thompson first revealed in his debut project "Manic + Organic". It's been 15 years since then; we're glad he's back and hoping he sticks around a bit longer this time. The title of the album's first track "Bound for Nowhere" is a playful wink to Woody Guthrie's "Bound for Glory" but that's where the similarities end, with Thompson taking us on a train ride to hell and back, with hell defined as that space between your ears. "Hiding In Plain Sight" sounds like Tom Petty's and D.B. Cooper's love child and has an easy, 70s country rock vibe to it; could be the album's lead single. A surprise comes about halfway through the set when Thompson mixes things up and gives us a stream of love songs minus the sentimentality that concludes with "Something's Better Than Nothing". The whole thing wraps up with a blues-influenced meditation that lets us know he's still out there searching. Here's hoping the search continues and results in more inspired songs like these.
