This album exposes the genius and creativity of one of Jazz's best arrangers and peformers. I happened upon this recording while browsing through racks and was extremely surprised at the quality of the recording and the beauty of the tunes themselves. The liner notes provided more in-depth insight into Gerry Mulligan than I'd ever seen or known about him. Most people might be familiar with his name from the Dave Brubeck trio, and Brubeck's famous tune, "Take Five", a notable jazz standard. Of note on this CD are the tracks that feature ensembles that have NO piano at all, which is quite rare for jazz tunes. Mulligan's arrangements throughtout are simply breath-taking, with complex horns and rhythms woven around such numbers as "All the Things You Are", and "How High the Moon". I'd have to list all the tracks as favorites...but, grab this CD and listen for yourself. Finger-snappin' good. Makes me want to put on my Ray Ban Wayfarers and a Homburg, and sit back and relax.
