The DeRita Sisters were a cult band that achieved notoriety in Europe and released 30 albums over a 23 year period of activity. Rocketships And Bullets was their second album. Co-conspirators Mark Gilman and Jay Smith wrote 50 songs for the record and realized quickly that they wouldn't all fit on the cd. Armed with four-track cassette demos, they went into the studio with drummer and producer Danny Brent and with no rehearsals, recorded the basic tracks for 39 songs in one day. It's a masterpiece of improvisation, focus and hard work. The album has a very organic feel to it that many rock records lack due to over-production. Hot on the heels of their first album We Did Not Ask To Be Born, the second release was critically acclaimed but commercially ignored. The title track is an homage to Hawkwind with bathroom lyrics and continues on a journey through bizarre topics like jerk chains, urine boners, Rodney King's affection for transvestites, bizarre sexual practices, and everything that was wrong with society at the time (1993). With tongues firmly in cheek, the DeRita Sisters brought it on full force. This record couldn't be made today. The PC Police heads would explode. But it's funny stuff.
