I moved to Los Angeles in January 1986, with a small Volvo stationwagon. For several years I did not own a TV and listened to late night radio when I got off work from second shift. After a while, I tape recorded some interesting lectures on cassette. In 1989, I moved to a one bedroom and did not have a bed, I ordered a custom built futon matterss, but the local manufacturer did not deliver the mattress for several months and even then they got the order wrong. In the mean time, my friend David N. loaned me an air mattress to sleep on. One weekend, I set up all my primitive electronic devices up on the floor of the bedroom and wired them into a single network that ended in the VHS VCR HiFi. After experimenting a little, I decided to record a test. This CD is that test. The VHS had some tracking problems and I was going to make the recording "for real" the next day. But, something else happened, and then my bed arrived and I had to disassemble the network. Years later, with the advent of Digital Audio, I was able to reconstruct the piece with the assistance of Brent Backhus at Real Time Copies in Culver City. It took about two years, and I also digitally restored all the lecture source material separately. The bonus tracks were recorded in Urbana-Champaign, Illinois on a cassette deck in my livingroom around the year 1984. Although the lecture material is somewhat dated, it is still interesting to me in that it deals with some of the same social issues we still grapple with today. Also, the "time capsule" quality of the material, helps remind us how life has changed. Mostly, I just thought it would be fun to make an "organic network" of sound producing electronics and these were the sound sources I had to work with. Although somewhat difficult at times, I am proud of this effort, It is best listened to by yourself, when you have lots of time and are bored or listless, and cannot sleep late at night.
