Originally formed to provide accompaniment to the now retired solo work of Alastair Cairns, Wells have grown into something much grander than the sum of its parts. At the age of 25 the writing Cairns shows a depth beyond his years, creating catchy engaging music to set the stage for his nuanced story telling. Very much a Frankenstein of various Sydney bands of differing styles, together Wells create precise and restrained indie rock that can at times be subdued and placid but also cinematic and grandiose. A robust live unit on stage they bring their characters to life with their throbbing guitars, ethereal synths and a precise driving rhythm section. Having caught the eye of Monday Records, home of Spookyland, Wells went into the studio early 2015 to put to tape their first joint effort. Recorded with Tony Buchen (The Preatures, The Falls, Bob Evans) and Mastered by Greg Calbi (Father John Misty, Waxahatchee, Modest Mouse) the Wells 4-track debut is a masterful piece of story-telling, at times haunting, at time uplifting but always engaging. Buchen’s Midas touch sings through and brings out the best qualities in the band and allows a solid foundation to which Cairns’ captivating themes, haunting croon and catchy melodies can shine. Lead single Fractures, which will be available in July 2015 shows a duality of stylistic elements combining for a catchy low tempo tune that grows in power and speed with its strong harmonies and surf guitar swells. The band will be launching the single with a string of East Coast shows in the Australian Spring of 2015 with a full EP release scheduled for later in the year.
