This is my Christmas song for 2012. I wrote this when my son was born. Whatever your spiritual beliefs, becoming a father or mother is in the realm of the holy. The holy hurt of living, I call it. At first, time slows down, minutes become hours and the disruption of sleep really throws you out of balance, permanently I think. It's good to be off balance, you feel more, you're more alive, for better and for worse. The title phrase comes from Luke 24:32. I had mistakenly remembered it as the 3 Kings bearing gifts on their way to Bethlehem to greet the newborn child, but in fact it was the 2 men on the road to Emmaus, unknowingly walking and talking with Jesus after his resurrection. I'll forgive my error in the name of poetic license. Whatever your religious beliefs, or lack thereof, there is poetry in the Bible. So much of the literary realm makes reference to it. Stories told, then written down. Our lives are stories, some written down, some just lived as they pass in their evanescence. The love that entered me upon becoming a father is there forever.
