This is an update of a song of mine that first appeared on the soundtrack to a Kevin Bacon movie, "Quicksilver." Then it was on my Atlantic album, "Fade to Black" and then after that Rod Stewart made an enormous world wide hit of it. His version was a blown up aggressive reading of the song, unlike my somewhat cool take on it that was influenced by Ricky Lee Jones. Other than hearing it at my local Ralph's supermarket on a regular basis, I haven't thought much about the song, until recently when my new Euro promoter requested that I do a Jack Johnson style remake of it in order to promote upcoming shows there. Surf dude, I am not, but it was fun to bring the song back to life. All the players are my regular live band, and except for a tambourine, finger snaps and a few vocal overdubs, it is a "live" take, though done in the studio. Bass and production by David Schwartz. I play my Gibson Nick Lucas guitar through a 60s vintage Gibson amp. The drums by Michael Jerome, and the singers are Nichelle Monroe and Lucy Schwartz. There's a soul in the city Watching over us tonight There's a soul in the city Saying everything's gonna be alright Bring over some of your old Motown records We'll put the speakers in the window and we'll go Up on the roof and listen to the Miracles echo in the alley down below Let's dance together and just for tonight Let's don't worry about the future or nothin' else 'Cause just like the music's sayin' you gotta take chances Go ahead, just trust yourself There's a soul in the city Watching over us tonight There's a soul in the city Saying everything's gonna be all right So bring over some of your old Motown records We'll put the speakers in the window and we'll go Up on the roof and listen to the Miracles Echo in the alley down below They wish us luck But, I know they think we're just dreaming Let's prove them wrong baby 'Cause you know what luck is Luck's believing you're lucky That's all, and showing just a little bit of faith There's a soul in the city Watching over us I swear There's a soul in the city There's a whole world waiting out there I got plans for us Playing like a skip on a record Through my head all night long But when we walk up that darkened stairway And step out on to the roof I know what we're feeling can't be wrong, can't be wrong Bring over some of your old Motown records We'll put the speakers in the window and we'll go Up on the roof and listen to the Miracles echo in the alley down below
