The idea for Sugar Beats was formed in 2003 by Chris Mapp and Leo Altarelli, and was initially a collection of 3 tunes recorded at Chris house. This would be the foundation for the 7 piece band captured on this record. Brought together by a love of all kinds of music, the band soon found that their brand of jazz was something for everyone to enjoy. The quality of the musicianship and the on-stage energy has had many an intelligent dance-floor shaking.This is the first album release on Calm Beast Records, a label set up to put out the best in new (not nu) jazz. Sugar Beats style is difficult to pin down, but that might explain why it appeals to so many different people. This album represents the journey of a typical Sugar Beats set, mixing up tempos, feels and rhythms but somehow holding together as an individual sound. This is music played by a new generation of jazz-lovers for a new generation of club-goers.Watch out for these boys. Straight no Chaser, I enjoyed watching Sugar Beats live, they were excellent.
