by Rob TheakstonWhat started off innocently enough as a series of loft parties in N.Y.C. turned into a global phenomenon for the two DJs known as Rub 'n' Tug. Shortly after the duo's Campfire series on Eskimo, Rub 'n' Tug were much in demand for remixes by such mainstream pop luminaries as !!!, the Beastie Boys, and Coldplay. Somehow, in between productions and a massive string of gigs, they found time to mix up 16 of their most beloved tracks for the mighty Fabric mix series. A notable departure from the recent string of minimal and tech-house mixes the club/label has commissioned (Audion, Tiefschwarz, Marco Carola), Rub 'n' Tug slowly work through some recent club favorites from Claude Vonstroke and Röyksopp before venturing into obscure Chicago house (1988's Marshall Jefferson-produced "Let's Get Busy") and Detroit techno. The rest of the disc wanders through the streets of Italo-inspired dance-punk and epic-length techno before hitting its peak with Kris Menace's "Discopolis" and Âme's "Engoli." It's an eclectic mix-up and, alongside Carl Craig's contribution to the Fabric series, definitely among the most diverse. A challenging mix for those who like their dance music with a bit of sonic diversity.
