简介

by François CoutureThe importance of multi-instrumentalist Werner Dafeldecker in the development of acoustic-meets-electronic-meets-abstractionism free improv sound should not be understated, and Eis 9 proves it once again. On this release he is paired with electronic musician Boris D. Hegenbart. Using a stripped-down selection of instruments, the two of them create delicate pieces emphasizing sound over energy and introspection over panache. Soft hits on a gong, a few notes of prepared guitar, minimal percussion, non-intrusive electronic treatments, and carefully selected samples all come together in this music, constantly pushing back the limits of active listening. And yet, it feels somewhat lighter than usual, almost joyful (a feeling enhanced by the sunny, flowery cover artwork). The seven pieces on this CD were recorded in the studio and were probably edited from a few longer sessions (the same technique was used for Aluminium, Dafeldecker's CD with Dean Roberts). As a result, a few tracks don't have a chance to resolve and some edits simply leave the listener unsatisfied -- a situation that occurs at the end of "Is" and "Se," and the beginning of "Le," especially when these are listened to with headphones. A few moments feel less inspired ("Es" and parts of "Se," for instance) but in general Eis 9 is enjoyable for those seasoned to post-minimal free improv and will provide others with a healthy esthetic shock.
