简介

by François CoutureThe first half of the CD Printer is a live improvisation recorded on May 20, 1999. Werner Dafeldecker and Uli Fussenegger both play acoustic bass, although one should not expect to hear notes: strings are scratched, wood frames are knocked, sounds are produced. Dieter Kovacic on turntables complete the trio. The improv is a long, slow-evolving, very abstract piece of work. In the second half, each musician uses the recording of the improv as sound source and "remixes" a new piece. Dafeldecker's "Mokélé-Mbembé" is a seven-minute high-pitched electronic drone that bears no resemblance to the original piece. Kovacic built ethereal rhythm loops on "Dun" accompanied by buzzing bass strings and high-pitched electronic noises. Fussenegger's "Bastimentos" is the best pick of the crop: it starts as a soundscape and builds up in volume and complexity. Fussenegger really reinvented the original improv while retaining its character. Overall, Printer is a nice conceptual exercise, although it lacks some of the body and character found on other Dafeldecker projects.
