“Jagged guitars, scuzzy indie warmth and candid lyrics – glorious” – Whisperin & Hollerin, When Lucy Joplin channelled the emotions she had laid down for years in a diary into her debut album ‘Rock Kicks’, it wasn’t meant to be pretty. As Whispering ‘n’ Hollerin pointed out “if the first rule of Rock ‘n’ Roll is authenticity, Joplin is already ahead of her pack”. Joplin’s turbulent life of family death, hostels, evictions, addictions, modelling, motherhood, excessive rock’n’roll and relationships surely should’ve resulted in an album almost unlistenable in its pain and confessionals?..... …..Strangely not. The first single from the album, ‘Not You Type At All’, was spun by none other than BBC’s Jonathan Ross, and Mike Skinner from Absolute FM, proving that Lucy’s Diary’s raw emotion actually churns out rather nicely as “scathing pop perfection” – Music OMH. Perhaps it’s Joplin’s sugary, husky vocals that recall the almost innocent sweetness of Kim Deal. For those who’ve seen the sweaty, packed out shows (Lucy’s Diary are firm – though somewhat misplaced – regulars on the antifolk live scene) perhaps it’s her model looks and childlike energy that gives it a less scary edge; but mostly it has to be the music. Like the pop-punk of the late 70’s that Lucy Joplin and her band consume - Bonide, Siouxie and the Banshees, Buzzcocks – Lucy’s Diary is simply fun, bullishly energetic and wholeheartedly vicarious, much like Joplin herself. With enough scuzz and spittle to keep it just the right side of punk credible, but formed into such infectious tunes and choruses with simple, meaty hooks, Lucy’s Dairy seep effortlessly from the underground to the commercial radio station on one debut single. Lucy’s Diary’s debut album ‘Rock Kicks’ is out now. This title track will be released as a digital single on Monday 29th November and comes with two very different remixes of ‘Rock Kicks’ on the b-side: ‘Brigitte Bravadot’ is by Death in Vegas producer Ian Button overlaying atmospheric electronica and dance beats and ‘Oculus III’ is a soothing trance mix from Joe Buzfuz of Sergeant Buzfuz – a soothing tonic for the morning after.
